The Fault in Our Stars by John Green - Setting

The book, The Fault in Our Stars, takes place in Indiana in the United States.  This book is set in the present day.  The main character is Hazel Lancaster, and she has thyroid cancer with mets in her lungs.  This book is realistic fiction, so Hazel just lives in our regular world.  Obviously, she has many struggles living with cancer.  For example, she has been through many surgeries and operations and needs to carry around an oxygen tank in order to breathe.  She is also just another teenage girl living a normal life, except for the fact that she does not attend school anymore because of her cancer.  Hazel has a crush on a boy named Augustus Waters, and Augustus likes her too.  Augustus is a cancer survivor and his leg was amputated because of his cancer.  They both have normal families and a great friendship with each other.

Hazel is just one of the millions of people who have cancer in this world.  Her story is special because she is able to find love despite this major setback in her life.  At one point in the story, Hazel says that she wants to stay away from people except for her parents.  This is because she feels like a "grenade".  Hazel says to her parents, "I'm a grenade and at some point I'm going to blow up and I would like to minimize the casualties, okay?"  This means Hazel wants to stay away from other people because when she dies, she doesn't want to hurt anyone, like Augustus.  Then Hazel says, "I just want to stay away from people and read books and think and be with you guys because there's nothing I can do about hurting you; you're too invested, so just please let me do that, okay?  I'm not depressed.  I don't need to get out more.  And I can't be a regular teenager, because I'm a grenade."  I think Hazel can be a regular teenager in the world, she just doesn't believe that she can because of her awful disease.  At this point, Hazel has mixed feelings about Augustus.  She likes him, but at the same time, after Augustus touched her face in a caring way, she thinks, "But the actual touch, the realized touch... it was all wrong".  This is probably because she really does like Augustus, but when she dies, she doesn't want him to be hurt.  It is almost like she feels as if she doesn't belong in this world, but she has a lot to live for.

Next in the story, I think that Hazel will end up going to Amsterdam with Augustus (their plan is to go see the author of Hazel's favorite book), and they will fall in love.  I can predict that this will happen because I know deep down inside, Hazel really likes Augustus.  She needs someone like Augustus in her life to bring her happiness.  They are perfect for each other because they both know what it feels like to have cancer and how you need someone there for you in your life in a sad time like this.
