Samurai Shortstop by Alan Grantz

Samurai Shortstop is about a family of samurai in Turn of the Century Japan. The Emperor ordered all samurai to lay down their swords, or retire. The main character, Toyo Shimada, goes to Ichiko, which is a boys' school. There his father, Sotaro, teaches him Bushido, or the way of the samurai. His father, a former samurai, writes an article for the newspaper, Asahi Shimbun.
At Ichiko, Toyo is in the school besu-boru club (baseball team). He fought very hard to earn his postion on the team, his position (shortstop), and his teammates' respect.
In their first game against Kaseda, another school, Toyo made an outstanding double play. The author made it sound so good that it could compete with a Major League Baseball player. "Toyo came to life, moving quickly to his right...The ball ducked beneath the third baseman's glove, and Toyo was there. Reaching across his body, he swallowed the ball with his glove, pivoted, jumped, and launched the ball to Katsuya. He watched as the second baseman swept the bag with his foot, hurdled the sliding runner, and threw down to first." This quote made me think of Major League Baseball. Here is a video of a double play, http://youtu.be/n4Fo9MXY3XI. Toyo is a freshman at Ichiko and I think that it is amazing that he could do something like that.

Where She Went

Where She Went is the sequel to the popular book If I Stay. Where She Went was written from the perspective of Adam Wilde, Mia Hall's former boyfriend. At the end of If I Stay, Mia choses to live, which we find out in Where She Went. This wonderful novel tells us Adam's story, how it felt to be left behind by the girl he loved, and the beautiful story of their reunion. As they get to know about what actually happened and why it happened, they slowly begin to fall back in love.
I never planned on reading this book; in fact I didn't know that it existed. I read If I Stay first because I heard good things about the book and movie. I really enjoyed the book. I saw my friends reading Where She Went and they told me it was the book after If I Stay. I knew I had to read it!
I think that the song "Still Into You" by Paramore is a great representation of this book. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OblL026SvD4 This song strongly connects with the book because they both tell a story about a relationship where they were together for a long time, but then they were also apart for a long time. When they met up "after all this time", they are still in love with each other. And even though they fight sometimes, they continue to love each other, much in comparison to Mia and Adam's relationship. The song says, "I should be over all the butterflies But I'm into you And baby even on our worst nights I'm into you." In the relationship between Mia and Adam, they were together for quite some time, but then Mia's accident occurred and when she healed she left him behind, moving to the other coast. This leaves Adam confused and lonely. When he goes to New York, he sees Mia perform in a cello concert and the spark of their reformed relationship has begun. When they were talking to each other, they have some rough patches, but it brings them closer to love. This relates to a part in the song where the sing, "It's not a walk in the park To love each other But when our fingers interlock, Can't deny, can't deny you're worth it 'Cause after all this time I'm still into you." This song is a very good representation of Adam and Mia's reunion.

Just One day

I Highly suggest reading Just One day by Gayle Forman. If you are a fan of Gayle Forman's book If I stay, then would will definitely enjoy this book. Just one day is a story about a girl, Allyson, and a boy, Willem. The first time they meet, they had a connection. The second time they met, It was fate. Allyson decided to follow Willem to Paris. One night, they had a lot of fun. The next morning, she woke up not knowing where she was. "I reach for Willem, but he's not there....I check my watch, but my wrist bare"(132)
During this part of the book, I made connection to an Avril Lavigne song "I'm with you." The reason I chose this is because both Avril and Allyson are going through the same kind of situation. When Avril says "I'm looking for a place
I'm searching for a face
Is anybody here I know
'Cause nothing's going right
And everything's a mess
And no one likes to be alone

Isn't anyone trying to find me?
Won't somebody come take me home" This is like when Allyson Is searching for the face she thought was loyal. The face she followed to Paris. The face of Willem.

Shattering Glass by Gail Giles                                         In  the book Shattering Glass by Gail Giles a boy named Simon glass was very easy to hate but one day the kids whom were bullying them on accident killed him. That is the best summery of this book I personally think because it gives so much detail about the boy whom was killed and the boys personality who did kill him. This book was recommended to me by Mrs.S and all she had to say to me to get me hooked was read the first paragraph and I did now I'm hooked. I would most definitely recommend this book to a friend it's a great read. In my opinion this book relates a lot to the show Dexter because if you watch the show it is very much like this.

Tangerine, Edward Bloor.

The book I am reading is called Tangerine, and this book is manly about a boy who moves from Texas to Florida which is known for having a lot of lightning hitting and killing people. He and his brother are close but, his brother gets the attention because he plays football and that is what his dad cares mainly about football. But when the son is on the football team a young boy named Mike Costello dies from being stuck by lightning and Erik and his friend named Arthur tell the story to his mom and Paul. But after the story the mom runs into the kitchen makes some calls, Paul hears a noise of laughter and Erik and Arthur are laughing about the death of their teammate.
I chose this book because one its a sports book and judging by the cover it though it was going to be all about soccer but in the first part of the book it about the death of young Mike. But also I chose it because the book is a sports book and in the beginning of the year I saw a lot of sports books but never this one. When I asked Mrs. Schoeppich, to give me a new book she told me that this book, is a book that I would like. The last reason I chose this book was because I  wanted to read more because in middle school I struggled with reading but since it was a start of a new year I turned things around, and started to use my imagination when reading, and it worked.
A connection i can make to this book and Paul is that Paul is a goalie and he had a magic moment when he saved a shot from a kid name Gino Deluca, " Gino kept hammering penalty shots into the upper left corner of the goal while a tall kid in a gray sweatshirt retrieved the ball and rolled it back. Gino is obviously a major leaguer. He's the kind of guy you have to have on a soccer team in order to win. The guy who wants to take penalty kicks. The guy who's hungry to score the goals." So the magic moment Paul has is, making a save on Gino because he knew right where he was going to shoot. He made a save like Guillermo Ochoa like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_B2dupQtNg he made a save by " I sprang up and to my right wrist. The ball flew away from the goal fast as it had flown in. It sailed toward the far sideline. I hit the ground and popped up immediately, ready for more." The is the type of save he made and that is the type of saves Guillermo Ochoa makes in every game he plays.

Just Listen by Sarah Dessen

"'The girl who has everything,' he'd said, moving his hands in a tight, circular motion, as if that was all it took to encompass something so vast, not to mention vague." (page 2)

Just Listen, by Sarah Dessen, shows how to others, someone's life could seem perfect, like they have it all...when that's not really the case. Meet Annabel, a model, who's life changes all because of one person. Sophie was the new girl when Annabel met her, in sixth grade. Sophie followed Annabel's older sister and her friends around during the summer. After Sophie runs off and  leaves her stuff when Annabel's sister yells at her, Annabel and her best friend, Clarke, brought Sophie her stuff. Once this happened, they became friends. But once Annabel and Sophie started getting closer, Annabel grew apart from Clarke. Skip to modern day: Annabel and Clarke don't speak anymore, Sophie hates Annabel, Annabel has no one, and she has no motivation in her modeling career. On the first day of school, Annabel ate lunch all alone. She saw the mysterious, judged Owen Armstrong, who has been accused for so many things that Annabel doesn't know what to believe...so she doesn't believe any of it. She also saw Clarke eating lunch by her, but when Clarke saw Annabel, she left. And to top it all off, Annabel saw someone who brought back not only some bad memories, but also her lunch.

I chose this book because I had read some Sarah Dessen books before. I liked, and still like, her style of writing. She doesn't write about meaningless things, she writes about stuff that could actually happen in real life to anyone. Her books have meaning, and a real story behind them. Her books are so realistic that I, as a reader, can sometimes compare an event or a series of events that took place in my life to the story. Also, I liked that it was about music.

I see a connection between Annabel, the main character, and Elsa, from Disney's movie Frozen. The connections that I see emerging between Annabel and Elsa is that they're both masking their feelings. They both don't let anyone in so no one can hurt them...but this is only making it worse in the long run. Annabel is masking all her sadness with fake smiles and a practiced façades when she is modeling. And Elsa is masking all of her sadness, loneliness, anger, and all of her other feelings with a practiced façade and a pair of gloves when in the presence of other people. "Conceal, don't feel, don't let them know," is what Elsa says in the song, Let It Go. Elsa tells herself to not feel, and that doing this will keep others from finding out her secret. She's bottling her feelings inside until she finally explodes. This is also what Annabel is doing. She's pushing all of her emotions to the side and bottles them up when she's modeling, so no one finds out what happened. They're both trying to "fake it 'till you make it," which doesn't always work...because sometimes some people can see through the fake smiles and the façades.

The Scorch Trials

At the moment in The Scorch Trials Thomas and the Gladers are just escaping out of the lightning storm that left them burned injured and some dead. The Gladers have found a building on the edge of the city that seems to be abandon. They enter the building and find a building that seems to be full of early stage Cranks.

I choose this book because I really loved the first book The Maze Runner. The book is starting off a little slow pace but i believe it will pick up soon. I decided to start reading this series when i saw the preview of the movie on TV and decided I wanted to read the books first.

Throughout the first and second book Thomas and Theresa have a very strong bond that grows through there telepathy. They are like a part of each other and are insuperable in the first book. In the beginning of the Scorch Trials, Theresa disappears from the dorm and they believe shes has been taken. This greatly impacts Thomas and hinders his ability to thinks straight. After Theresa is taken away from him he asks as if a piece of himself is gone as well.
In a TV show i watch, Chicago Fire, Kelly
Severide and Leslie Shay have a relationship similar to that of Theresa and Thomas, but in a less romantic way. Severide is the Lieutenant of the squad truck and Leslie Shay is a parametric that assists the firefighters. Severide and Shay become close from the start and become roommates. They bond alot and become comparable to that of a brother and sister. On a call to a building on fire the building explodes and Shay is killed inside the building from head trauma. Severide takes her death extremely hard and starts to make stupid decisions and becomes an alcoholic. Severide soon falls apart and is an emotional wreck, crashing in different places everynight and even goes to Vegas and marries a girl he barely knows. These two stories connect by showing how when Severide and Thomas lose a person close to themselves they also loose apart of themselves and fall apart.

The video below shows how Severide lost Shay and how it affects him in a general view

Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz

The Book that I have recently finished, is called Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz.
In the book, Ian is the nephew of top secret agent Alex Rider. Ale Rider was shot and killed on a mission. As the book goes on, Ian gets suspicious  about the death of his uncle. Ian gets caught up and the head of the agents, and they ask Ian to finish the mission his uncle could not finish. Ian says yes and is trained and sent off on to the mission his uncle could not finish. Ian comes face with the murder of his uncle, and ends up completing the job.

I chose the book Stormbreaker because I usually read more dramatic books, and I decided to go to a action book. This was recommended by my school Librarian, and thought I would give it a shot. My brother had also read this book and said it was a good book!

I saw connection between Disney movie "The Spy Kids". Seeing that in "The Spy Kids" it is a family business I see the connection of family like Alex Rider and Ian Rider. Also, seeing the children being spys like Ian Rider and both coming in and saving the day.

A Dance with Dragons

This book is a continuation of the A Song of Ice and Fire series by George RR Martian. It takes place in the fantasy world of Westeros. The book follows the war of the five kings and the war against the Others in the North, along with the rise of Daenerys Targaryen and how that will effect Westeros.
I chose this book because it is the last one so far in the series I have been reading. I originally chose the series because I like fantasy and I had heard the TV show was good so I wanted to read the books.  My parents also watch the show and I had heard from them that it was good. My cousin also recommended it to me.
Sansa Stark is a character who starts off, honestly, a little spoiled and entitled, but through out the series she has become one of the strongest characters. She has become cunning and is able to lie well enough to not only escape the lanniasters ,who have tormented her for years and now want her, but to even secure a better claim and life for herself. Most of her story line in the first few books was just her trying to survive in Kings Landing with Joffery, the boy she was supposed to marry who constantly had her hurt. This only happened after she had trusted the lannisters before though. She was originally very excited to go to kings landing, marry Joffery, and eventually become queen and living the perfect life she had been told she was going to live. The majority of the first book was her loving and trusting them with her future, but the day they had her father beheaded she realized too late they did not have the pure goals she thought they did. She had assumed they had the intentions she had been told queens and princes and the rest of the royal family had in the stories she had been told. This ties into the real world because that experience and how it affected her is something some readers can relate to. People believe what they want to believe about something or someone for as long as they can until they have no choice but to face reality. This affected Sansa so much not only because of the horrific thing that happened, the beheading of her father right in front of her, but by the fact that is was done by people she had once called her friends. Her friends had betrayed her in the most brutal possible way and, unfortunately, I think some people may be able to relate to that. This song fits her story line and experiences perfectly.

Dark Passage (Kingdom Keepers #6)

The book I'm reading is called Dark Passage. It is the 6th book in the Kingdom Keepers series. The series is by Ridley Pearson. The Kingdom Keepers is a group of 3 boys and 2 girls that were models for the DHI's (Disney Host Interactive) that were holographic tour guides through Disney Parks. But when they all had the same dreams with each other that seemed to real to be a dream, they realized that in the night, they crossed over into their holographic selves in the Disney parks. The only way to cross over is a little white controller they always keep with them. If they don't cross over, they are stuck sleeping until they do crossover. During their adventures, they met 2 girls with extraordinary "powers". Jess can see the future through her dreams and Amanda can make things levitate. They, among a couple others (not where the book takes place), are called "Fairly's" (meaning fairly human). The point go the kingdom keepers is to stop the overtakes from taking over the Disney parks. The overtakes are all of the villains Walt Disney ever created (Chernabog, Maleficent, Cruella di Vil, Tia Dalma, just to name a few). They have stopped the overtakers but now they are on the Dream Disney Cruise. Almost every overtaker is on the cruise line, putting everyone's lives in danger.  I choose this book because I've loved the series. Even at the beginning of the book, there's action which pulls you in unlike most books where you dread through the beginning of the book. I choose the first book because I was looking into a book to read and I got it for Christmas. I fell in love with it right away and I knew I would continue on with the series

I really see the connection between the book and Disney World. The vivid descriptions of the rides and places they go Into are just like the ones at the actual place. I like how the author uses so much description that I can see everything going on. And when I am in Disney, I always go to where the kingdom keepers were (mostly to just ride the ride). The author shows the connection very well because of all the detail and because he must have been there before because he knows where everything is.

The silver chair

The book that is the fourth part in the chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis is about Eustace and a girl named Jill that is his classmate, just like the first 3 books they suddenly enter Narnia, in this part Aslan who actually is a talking lion tells them to find the lost prince. in their journey with a marsh wiggle named puddleglum they meet some characters from last 3 books but after all the hard things in their journey they find the prince in the underworld and finally by killing the witch the arrive at Narnia, in the the princes father king cassias that was really old died when he arrived from his sailing trip but Aslan brings him back for a little while and they go to our world and solve the problems in the experiment house that had many problems and In the end Jill and Eustace that where nearly enemies before the adventure become best friends.
I started reading the chronicles in persian since I was first grade, I had already read 5 of the 7 books and this one is number 4 that I hadn't read and I really enjoy the book because it really takes you to the environment of the story and I think the author has done a good job in describing the environment.
Narnia is like a better version of our world that has talking animals and the same animals that we have, they have many other creatures that don't exist in real life like centaurs and elfs and etc .

"Well, don't let's bother about that then. Supposing I told you I'd been in a place where animals can talk and where there are - er - enchantments and dragons - and well, all the sorts of things you have in fairy-tales." Scrubb felt terribly awkward as he said this and got red in the face."(2)

Words Hurt

The book I am reading is Positive by Paige Rawl.  This book is about a girl who has been living with HIV since birth.  HIV, not aids, yes they are two different things.  Paige decides to tell her best friend in the whole world her secret that nobody else knew about and within an hour over half her grade knew and were bullying her and making jokes about a topic that is not funny at all.  Paige starts to let the bullies get to her until she realizes that she did nothing wrong, it is not her fault she has HIV and if they want to make fun of her for that then that reflects what kind of person they are, not her.  She should not be labeled by a disease that has no affect on anyone else.  If nobody had told them, they would have never known that she was living with this disease.  You cannot see the HIV on the outside.  After going through some rough times and getting help she over comes her struggles and ends up coming out a stronger person than before.

I picked this book because my mother bought it for me when she saw it on a TV show recommending it be a book all teens should read.  I was going to put it in the pile of books that I have yet to read or never will, until I read the back.  I was thinking it would be the typical story about a kid getting bullied and how they did everything they could to stop it and when it does everything returns to normal, but there was something different in the words they chose, something that just told you that this wasn't going to be a happy book.  Yes, this was true, I may have been caught dripping a tear on the pages a few times.

This book reminds me a lot of the ABC Family movie Cyberbully (staring Emily Osment) because they both have a similar situation.  In both cases it is their best friends who end up causing all of the harm and doing the most damage in the first place.  This hurts them so much mentally making them believe that there is no one out there that you can trust because the one person they felt they could trust turned on them and were the reason for their pain and suffering.  It is hard to stop thinking this way after something this horrible has happened to you.  In the movie Taylor (the main character) was bullied so much by her best friend that she attempted suicide.  In the book, Paige was terribly bullied to the point that she also had attempted to end her life.  Not only did other people hate them, but the other people got into their head and convinced them to hate themselves too.  I would agree, nobody would want to live a life filled with hate for themselves, but ending your life is not the answer.  Life is a very valuable thing that should not be taken away because of others influence on you.  In result, they both receive the help that they need and become stronger and learn to understand how to deal with there bad feelings instead of burying them until they have no other way to come out than in a harmful way to themselves.  The concept of both this book and this movie is very sad, but teaches a good lesson to everyone that words truly do  hurt and that we all have feelings that need to be respected no matter what.

The Land of Stories

I am reading The Land of Stories by Chris Colfer. This book is about twins named Alex and Conner. Alex is a smart girl who does well in school. She enjoys reading stories, especially fairy tails. She wishes that she had more friends. Conner has a lot of friends but doesn’t do very well in school. The twins’ grandma gives them a magical storybook for their birthday. One day, they fall into the storybook and the only way out is to find eight items for a wishing spell. When they get the items, they can get one wish so they want to wish to go home. Unfortunately, the spell can only be used one time and the Evil Queen is also trying to collect the items before the twins do. The items are very hard to find and dangerous to collect. They have already seven of the items and they need one more.
My friend got me this book for my birthday last year and she said it was really good. She reads a lot of books and she told me this was one of her favorites so I really wanted to read it. I thought it sounded interesting because it starts out like a realistic fiction story but turns into fantasy later in the book. She got me two other books as well, I read all of them, and this one was my favorite.

The idea of this book is a little bit like the movie The Wizard of Oz. Just like Dorothy, the twins get stuck in a different land and want to find a way home. Both Dorothy and the twins have to go on a long journey to find the way to go home. They also both meet many new people along the way, some are good and some are bad.

The Longest Ride - Nicholas Sparks

I am currently reading the book The Longest Ride by Nicholas Sparks. I chose to read this book because I heard the movie is coming out next year and really wanted to read the book before I saw the movie. This book is about an old man who drove off the rode and can not move. He is having flash backs to when him and his late wife first met. I made a connection from the song "Everything Has Changed" by Taylor Swift. The song is about someone meeting someone for the first time and knowing that they are going to be in love. This reminded me as to when Ruth, the wife, first came into Ira's shop when they were sixteen years old. Ira immediately knew he was going to fall in love with her. The lyrics "because all I know is we said hello, and your eyes look like coming home all I know is a simple name and everything has changed." This made me think of when they first met and Ira knew that this connection they had was going to be something big and nothing was going to be normal anymore.

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green- Connection

I most recently completed the book The Fault in Our Stars by John Green.  In this book, a girl named Hazel Lancaster has cancer.  Hazel is depressed because she knows she is going to die soon.  She needs some happiness in her life.  This happiness comes in the form of Augustus Waters, Hazel's new crush that she meets in her cancer support group.  They eventually start dating after they go on a trip to Amsterdam together to meet Hazel's favorite author.  They have a connection because Augustus used to have cancer, but doesn't anymore.  He had his leg amputated because of it.  Augustus and Hazel can relate to each other, and they fall in love.  Then, something tragic happens.  Augustus finds out that his cancer has came back.  He is gonna die because it is everywhere in his body.  Hazel and Augustus still spend a lot of time together, and she takes care of him.  When Augustus dies, Hazel is heartbroken because she has lost this great happiness in her life.  She will forever embrace her first love, Augustus Waters.

I chose this book because I heard from many people how great of a story it is.  They said that it is heartwarming, yet sad.  At first, I didn't want to read it because I heard it was sad.  Then, everyone was saying how good the movie was too, and I finally decided to read the book.  I thought that the book was amazingly written!  I really like reading fiction books that tell interesting stories, and this was one of those books.

A connection that I can make with this book is a story of a girl named Esther Earl.  She is a girl just like Hazel who had cancer.  Sadly, Esther has had her life taken by cancer just like Augustus Waters.  When Esther was alive, she had a diary in which she documented her life, her struggles and times of happiness.  She was a great writer who had a voice in her writing.  She believed that a short life could be a good life.  This is just what Augustus believed.  Her diary was made into a book called This Star Won't Go Out.  In fact, the author of The Fault in Our Stars, John Green, wrote the introduction to this book after Esther and him became friends.  Esther's journey inspired John Green to write The Fault in Our Stars and he dedicated the book to her.  Some parts in The Fault in Our Stars reflect Esther.  For example, Esther and Hazel are alike, but the whole novel is not about Esther's life.  Both of them had thyroid cancer and carried around an oxygen tank.  The Earl family created a foundation called This Star Won't Go Out.  It gives money to families with children who have life-threating cancer to help pay medical expenses.  The foundation was made in memory of Esther Earl.  These two similar stories are very inspirational and sad, yet heartwarming.
This is the website of the This Star Won't Go Out foundation: http://tswgo.org/index.html
The attached video is about Esther and her book, This Star Won't Go Out:

connections between books

The book I am reading independantly along with A Seperate Peace is Dear Nobody by Mary Rose. This book is kind of like a diary that was kept by the author throughout her life about her daily struggles. She has been through being an outcast ever since her and her mom moved or I should say moved again. She gets into trouble a lot and has a drinking problem and has been in rehab a few times so far for her drug problems.  I chose this book simply because I was at the bookstore with a friend in search of a summer reading book for her and a leisure rading book for me that would keep my mind occupied. I loved the cover of it (eventhough i always take off the cover). It perfectly illustrated the book. This book was very interesting and I loved how the book was writing to "nobody" because everyone writes "dear diary". I found the author to be brutally honest and I love that. Everyone now a days tends to tip-toe around what they truly want to say, so that they are not judged. The author told a lot about the truth of what it feels like to be an outcast and how hard it is to try. and fit in without coming off as if you are trying. I thought it related to A Seperate Peace because  the author is narrating th story and this makes her sound crazy as well. In the story we can always hear Gene's thoughts and we always say that he sounds crazy or he's an oddball but really he's just going about his normal day just like Mary. Mary seems like shes trying so hard to fit in but I dont think she has to try very hard. I think that these books are both very well written and well said.

Divergent

The book i am reading is Divergent by Veronica Roth.  In this Syfy Fantasy there are five factions. Factions are what they called states or cities.  Each faction had there own way of life and what they believed in.  The five factions are Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Erudite and Dauntless. This book is about a girl named Beatrice and she is in the faction Abnegation.  In Abnegation they believe in selflessness.  She didn't feel like she belonged there because she didn't feel like she had enough selflessness in her like her brother.  When the kids turn sixteen they can choose what faction they want to be in, but first they have to take an aptitude test to see which faction they should belong to.  Beatrice's test showed up inconclusive, which means she is a divergent.  Being divergent means that she has a little bit of every faction in her blood.  When they got to choose which faction they would like to be in, Beatrice chose Dauntless.  When she got to Dauntless they made her change her name because they said that "Beatrice" is not a dauntless name, so she changed it to "Tris.  For initiation they have to learn how to fight and use weapons and just how to be a dauntless.  There are rankings for all of them and their goal is to be one of the top ten so they can be in the Dauntless. If they don't make it they are faction less.  So far, Tris has made it into the second round of initiation.

I chose this book because I watched the movie, and I thought it was really good, so I decided that I wanted to read the entire series. I liked all the action in the movie and all the details that they put into it.  Also my friend recommended this book to me because she said it was a really good book series and thought I would enjoy it.  I also chose this book because it is a lot like the series The Hunger Games and i really enjoyed that series.

The connection that I made with the book Divergent was with the book series The Hunger Games.  I made this connection because I personally think that Tris from Divergent is a lot like Katniss from The Hunger Games.  They both have a lot of courage and have to fight in a "war".  In The Hunger Games Katniss had to fight for her freedom and so did Tris in Divergent. Tris had dot fight for her freedom because she is a divergent and its a very dangerous thing to be.  Katniss had to fight for her freedom because in the first hunger games she won and then in the second book she had to go back into the area where she once fought to fight for her freedom.

Divergent

Divergent, by Veronica Roth, is about a young girl named Beatrice, or Tris for short, and her life through the divergent universe. She lives in a society the defines its citizens by their social and personality-related affiliation with five different factions: Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), Erudite (the intelligent), Abnegation (the selfless), and Candor (the rulers). Tris is born into a family of Abnegation, but chooses to be Dauntless. In doing so, she begins to have a romantic relationship with her instructor nicknamed Four.
I chose this book to read because of my friend Garrett. He recommended this selection to me as he knows I love an action packed book filled with excitement. Since I started reading this book I have truly began to like it a lot, it has many scenes in which fights break out between friends and factions. Im not saying I enjoy violence, but the reason people get into fights or arguments really interests me, and it's a very occuring subject in this book.
A grand connection I can make between this book and our world is the idea of spliting social classes in our society and the spliting of citizens into factions in the Divergent society. As said before, the factions are split into certain groups of people who act and think in similar ways. For example, in the faction Dauntless, only the bravest and most corageous citizens enter this faction. I can connect this to our society because the people of our time tend to split eachother up into our own separate factions unwillingly. I say this because of the fact that school itself is split into social categories such as the popular group, the nerdy, more scholar like, group, the sports 'junkies' or sports players, the more normal and mature group, the dweebs, and also the kids who aren't as smart. These social classes relate to the five factions of the Divergent society as they both split groups of people up based upon certain charateristics or behavior.

Here are some of the social classes found in our young society today (not including all, only some).

If I stay

The book If I stay by Gayle Forman is a favorite book of mine. I finished the book a couple of weeks ago and it always comes across my mind. It is a book about a girl who loves listening and playing music, and her boyfriend Adam is a big part of her life as well. Her family gets in a car accident, her whole family dies, and she has to decide if she wants to stay or go. I chose this book because I saw the trailer and I love reading the book first and then watch the movie after. I like making my own visuals first. A lot of lives have been taken earlier then expected in car accidents. Its sad knowing that car accidents can take valuable lives. Waking up with no family could be the hardest thing she would have had to do. My connection is that recently there has been a couple car accidents that make a impact on the whole community. When someone leaves a lasting impact you know they made an impact as a whole. Mia hall, the main character, has a big impact on music and her boyfriend. The song I picked that made me think of this book is "Say Something" by A Great Big World & Christina Aguilera. I picked this because its says " say something I'm giving up on you" Adam, her boyfriend & the doctor's can relate to this because the both want her to live.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2U0Ivkn2Ds

Blood of Olympus

The book I'm reading is Blood of Olympus by Rick Riordan. So far in the book we have followed are band of teenaged heroes across Greece to fight the giants and stop Gaea from rising. So far the heroes have reached the giants and are about to try to sneak into the Acropolis in Athens and stop them. If this isn't making any sense it is because it is the fifth and final book in the series Heroes of Olympus, which expands on the previous five book series Percy Jackson and The Olympians. So to understand most of this there is a lot of reading to do but I'll try to keep it simple.
I chose Blood of Olympus because I've read all nine books that lead up to it, and to be honest I will probably reread the entire series once again after I finish it. I don't know why I first read the first book but I love the series. It is awesome to reread because there are so many charters with so many quests that besides major plot points you sometimes get surprised again.
The setting of the book finale is basically now and you actually follow one of the characters, Percy who is the main character in Percy Jackson and The Olympians, from the time he is twelve to now when he is eighteen.
In the book the characters are what ware called demi-gods, which means they have lone human parent and one God parent, since they are just teenagers they think about other stuff going on in the real world.
This connection really is interesting because it causes you to reflect on what the characters are actually doing. They're ages range from fourteen to eighteen and they are about to god take on giants meant to destroy gods and stop the earth itself from waking up and destroying humanity. All the while they are still teenagers (one of them being my age and for me it is an inner battle deciding what homework to start first) and they are going through things that bring you back and realize their youth. One moment in Particular is one character, Piper, has a father who is a hollywood movie star, and while out doing one of their missions she sees the billboards of her dads new movie and is embarrassed by it. In a world where she is constantly under the threat of being killed while simultaneously trying to save humanity she still gets embarrassed by her father being famous. Moments like these allow a better connection to the characters through personal and relatable moments like these and it makes the book even more difficult to put down.

Rapture

The book I am reading is called Rapture by Lauren Kate. So far the book is about two characters, named Daniel and Luce, trying to stop Lucifer from erasing time. Lucifer is trying to erase the thousands of years between the fall, when many angels fell from Heaven, and the worlds end and it's up to Daniel, Luce and some other angels to stop him. To do so they have to relocate the location where they fell on Earth and beat Lucifer there so they can defeat him. But first they have to find three relics to help them find the location of the fall since they have forgotten. It's like good versus evil. Luce and Daniel are not only trying to stop Lucifer from erasing their existence but the worlds existence and everything around it.
I chose this book, because it was the next book in the series. I chose this series, because my friend was reading it and said that it was really good. I also needed something else to read and thought that I would try this series. So far I really like it and would recommend this series.
The connections that I see are between Rapture and Twilight. I see this connection because they are both about a boy and a girl falling in love with each other and their love, of coarse, having consequences. Their consequences results in them being in danger and having to find a way to end this danger so that they can be together in peace. They also have to travel to different places and ask for help to conquer the bad guy.

Way of the Wolf

Way of the Wolf by Bear Grylls is a book about a kid named Beck who is traveling out to Alaska with his uncle.  During the plane ride he meets a native named Tikaani.  When they are close to their arrival the pilot ends up flying into a storm which leads to the plane crashing at the base of a mountain.  Beck and Tikaani have to take care of his uncle because he was badly injured in the crash while Beck and Tikaani are okay.  They start heading off into the tundra with limited layers and extremely limited supplies which is where I left off and I'm excited to find out how they find help and survive in these extreme conditions.

I chose this book because my teacher recommended this book to me.  She recommended this book to me because I like adventure, exciting, and thrilling books.  This book can be categorized as all three which makes this book an excellent match for my interests.  This book also doesn't just dab into the three categories or in one man than the other two.  Way of the Wolf deeply goes into all three categories which makes for an exciting novel to read.

I can relate Beck to a leader because of his bravery and intelligence.  Beck led Tikaani all through the tundra even though he was as scared as he had ever been.  Beck also stayed calm and never showed Tikaani that he was afraid or that he doubted that they and his uncle were gonna be okay.  These traits and decisions were the reason Tikaani was always comfortable and never feared anyone or anything.

The book Smoke by Ellen Hopkins is the sequel to a book I read last year, Burned, which told the story of a girl named Pattyn who spent a summer with a very realistic and loving aunt and ultimately kills her father out of resentment for an abusive childhood. Smoke tells about her life on the run from authorities. She helps a lady on a bus, Adrianna, retrieve her wallet from a thief, who in turn helps Pattyn by letting her stay with her family in a trailer park. While Pattyn stays with them, she learns that Adrianna's parents snuck out of Mexico to give her older brother a better life when he was born.
I think this shows a political connection to the world right now, with the similar stories of illegal immigrants we hear on the news. These people come here to escape poverty and/or danger at home, but aren't able to do so legally whether it's because the process of doing so that our government has available is too difficult to do, or because their own government does not allow them the opportunity. This problem is relevant in the book because the brother, Angel, is only able to find work on a ranch that just barely pays enough to get through college. He also mentions in the book that even after that, he has no idea what he might be able to do once he is done with school, seeing that he is still living with his family in a trailer.

The Scorch Trials

The Scorch Trials by James Dashner, is the sequel to The Maze Runner. So far the Gladers have covered most of The Scorch that they have to cross. They eventually reach a city in which they look to find shelter and food, but as they enter the city a massive lightning storm rolls in. After suffering more casualties they finally make it to cover. They soon learn that the building is filled with Cranks, people infected by the flare, but these Cranks are not fully gone. Thomas, the main character, finds a way to make an agreement with the leader for there help in crossing the city to reach the the safe heaven in the mountains.
This book wasn't a recommendation, just a another book in the series, but he entire series was recommended to me by my librarian.

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysSxxIqKNN0

I saw a link between this song and the book when the Gladers had to run through the lightning storm. "They fell from the sky in jagged streaks, like bars of white light, slamming into the  ground  and throwing up massive amounts of scorched earth."  The lyrics " the lightning all around me" immediately makes me think of the Gladers running trying to avoid being struck by the massive lightning bolts raining down from above all around them. Also the name of the song "New Divide" makes me think of the Gladers crossing the Scorch, their own new divide between them and the safe haven they are trying to reach.

If I Stay

"If I Stay" is a novel about a teenage girl, Mia, who's family gets in a car accident. Her boyfriend Adam is a rocker and is the lead singer of the his band "The Shooting Stars." When her and her family are driving down an icy road, they hit another car. Her mother was killed from the impact and her dad died shortly after in the Emergency Room. Her brother hung on a little longer but he didn't make it. Mia is told that it is her choice if she stays in her life or if she dies along with the rest of her family. If she stays, she will be an orphan, but if she leaves, she leaves Adam. After a lot of debating between staying and leaving, she wakes up.

I chose to read this book because I heard that everyone was liking it. I also saw that there was a movie coming out about it so I figured it would not only be good but it would be different. Some of my friends saw the movie and said that they liked at that it was an interesting plot. I am the kind of person who likes to read a book before I go see it in the theatres. I ended up finishing the book and then went to see the movie.

I believe that this book relates to the song "See You Again" by Carrie Underwood. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vTnWFT3DvVA I think that it relates to that song because Carrie Underwood is singing that she wants a guy again after he goes out to war. Mia has the decision whether or not she stays in this world or leaves it with the rest of her family. The main reason that she chooses to stay is because she needs to be with Adam. She wants to see him again just like Carrie Underwood wants to see her love again. Mia would not be able to bear leaving Adam so she stays.

A dog called Homeless

The book I am reading is called A Dog Called Homeless by Sarah Lean. The main character is Cally Fisher she is  loud and is untrusted. Cally Fisher lives with her dad and brother in the house she grew up in. The house reminds Cally of her mom because the house was still left the way her mom left it, the way her mom loved it. Cally's dad had budget cuts at his work, which made them move into an apartment what ever he did Cally wasn't satisfied with it. Cally and her brother were not happy with the move and didn't understand why. Cally refused to talk to her dad, no matter what he was talking about. Cally was seeing her mom at the park she tried to tell her family but they didn't see anything and didn't believe her. One day Cally was walking and saw a homeless man, teenage boys were stealing his money but soon stopped by a baker from the shop. The baker handed a bag of food to give to Jed the homeless man. Cally saw  a dog with Jed and called the dog Homeless from the sign Jed was holding.  It was the same dog Cally saw with her mom. The apartment next to theirs were home to Mrs. Cooper and her son Sam. Sam was deaf and blind but he was still just like everyone else. Sam used brail as a way to communicate to people. As the story went on Cally and Sam relationship was a very good one. Mrs. Cooper was very kind to Cally when they first came to their new apartment even though to Cally it wasn't home.
I picked this book because by the cover it looked interesting. The cover is like a story, it makes you want to read it. When I started the book, it was hard to put the book down. I would recommend it to anyone.
The connections I see is between Cally and Sam it is a different connection then you would usually see it ,isn't that simple to have such a great bond like Sam and Cally do. It is hard for Cally to talk to Sam at first because she didn't really understand that Sam cant hear or see. Cally becomes an great friend to Sam, she takes him to the park with her. Then there is also an connection between Cally and Homeless the dog. Homeless was like an gift sent from her mom, Cally saw her mom walking with the dog. These connections became a big part of Cally's life. There friendship reminds me of a braille  friend ship necklace because that is way he communicates to people.

My Double Life

The book I'm reading is My double life by Janette Rallison  Alexia is  this poor girl from West Virgina  who finds out she has a celebrity father and twin sister. She has the option to go leave her mom and grandma to go help work for her sister. After all she's always wanted to go visit them. While Alexia is enjoying her life becoming a celebrity she seems to get into some boy drama which makes her want to go home. After bring Kari her twin sister for many weeks she decided that being famous wasn't so easy. I choose this book because it looked very interesting.

Alexia and Kari are both twin sisters who didn't even know they were sisters for half their life.  My book My Double Life reminds me of the movie The Parent trap because the two twin sisters went to a camp over the summer, but saw a picture of their parents they had ripped in half and then realized they were sisters. The two sisters decided to switch houses when they left and go with opposite parents. After a while one of the parents realized what was going on and told the other one.  The mother and father meet up to get their daughter back but then wanted each other back. Also in the book the two parents said they were going to try talking more just like the movie.

Leaving Paradise

In the beginning of the book, Leaving Paradise, by Simone Elkeles, Caleb Becker is in jail because he ran over his next door neighbor, Maggie Armstrong while being drunk after one of his friends party. Caleb ends up getting out of jail, The Illinois Department of Corrections- Juvenile complex(DOC) soon after the books starts. Maggie has been having to go to physical therapy a lot because she shattered her leg in the accident. Caleb not only destroyed Maggie's leg but he also destroyed Maggie's friendship with Caleb's twin sister, Leah and Maggie's and Caleb's parents relationship with each other. No one recommended this book to me. I chose this book out of the library just cause I thought it sounded good.Yes I liked the cover.

The struggle or destroyed relationship between Caleb and Maggie, both of their parent, and Maggie and Caleb's twin sister Leah reminds me of the book a Separate Peace. It reminds me of this book because in both a Separate Peace and in Leaving Paradise their friendships are both destroyed because of a shattered leg. In a Separate Peace Finny and Gene kind of get their friendship destroyed because Gene pushes Finny out of the tree which causes Finny to shatter his leg.

Fullmetal Alchemist

Fullmetal Alchemist

Volumes 10-11-12

This book is about two brothers Edward and Alphonse who are trying to find the Philosophers Stone to bring their mother back. Another reason that Ed and Alphonse are trying to get the stone is so that they can get their bodies back. Alphonse lost his whole body due to a Human Transmutation Spell. Ed lost his Right arm to the Human Transmutation spell, and Left leg due to the Blood Soul Capture Spell that he completed to take Al's Soul and put it in a body of Armor. That summary of FullMetal Alchemist is why Ed And Alphonse Elric are ready to face the Homunculi for the Philosophers Stone.

This book is Connected to A Seperate Piece because they are preparing for war against the Homunculi.

So much closer

"Brooke woke up to a whole new life." a girl name Brook liked a guy name Scott Adrams for a long time. he told her he was moving to new York. her dad was moving there and she went with her dad. she moved to new York for a guy, she only talked to once. she has no one there but her dad.  I found this book in the library and I thought it looked interesting.
Brooke is feeling so alone and it reminds me of Gene how he doesn't talk about family and all he had is finny.

Rangers Apprentice by John A. Flanagan

In the book Rangers Apprentice is about in a medieval time period there were these people that were trained to become a Ranger(were like the police or part of the army). The Rangers were trained and put into different fiefs(other kingdoms) to protect the people that live in that fief. Also the only people hat were allowed to be trained were men no girls were allowed.

I choose this book because the cover caught my eye and I read the back of the first book and I really liked it. My brother recommended it to me but I didn't want to read it until I actually read the back cover and the first couple pages. My brother recommended the book to me because it was about the medieval time period and because it was also an action and adventure books.

A connection that I can see in the book is that the ranger Will has not seen his friend in years and now he has to train his best friends daughter to become a ranger. The ranger corps doesn't allow girls to become a ranger but she was an exception. This can relate to the real world because some people don't get to see their friends, but they end up seeing their children instead of seeing their friend.

If I Stay

In The Book If I Stay. A girl named Mia had a family, a boyfriend and a great future ahead of her for her music. Then one day her and her family got in an accident and in an instant everything was taken away from her. Both her parents were dead and she was in a comma. In the book she has to decide if she wants to stay or not because if she stays she will be an orphan and she will be with her boyfriend Adam, but if she doesn't she will have to leave Adam behind. I chose this book because my sister read it and she thought it was really good.

I think the song Stay by Rihana connects to this book because Mia is deciding whether or not if she should stay. Adam her boyfriend wants her to stay so I think because he wants her to stay that the song related to the book Rihanna wants a guy to stay with her and Adam wants Mia to stay with him.

Exile by Rebecca Lim

I really liked the book Exile, by Rebecca Lim, which is the second book in the Mercy series. Though it was very confusing at some points which I ended up having to reread, I can still say it was a good book and that I enjoyed it.

The main character, Mercy, has to return to earth again and again. With each reincarnation, she has to take on a new human form. In each reincarnation, she loses the memory of her past life. In this book, Mercy wakes up in a new body. Her new human form is a teenager named Lela. Lela lives with her mother who has cancer, and is dying. Lela cares more about her mother than herself. Mercy, as Lela, starts to remember things about her past life. She remembers different memories, one of a boy who she loved in her previous life, named Ryan. In this life, she has to find him. Lela works at a cafe called "The Green Lantern". She meets a customer who often comes to the Green Lantern named Ranald. Lela finds a way to get Ranald to help her find Ryan. She thinks Ranald will not find out she is trying to find a boy from her past life. Ranald doesn't know that Mercy reincarnates and wakes up in different lives. At the end, Ranald decides to go to Lela and prove to her that he knows things and he knows that she is hiding something from him. He does this in the Green Lantern. He starts yelling at the other employees that he will no longer be treated like someone who doesn't know what is going on and that people are lying to him. He takes out a gun and threatens to shoot himself and everyone else there. Earlier, Lela had been talking to Ryan and making arrangements for him to come and take Lela with him on his way back to where he lives. As Ranald is standing inside the Green Lantern with a gun, Ryan is standing outside. He is watching through the windows, along with everyone else, including the police, on the street. He is so close to finding Mercy. Ranald shoots Lela and then himself. Lela dies and Mercy reincarnates into another human being.

I saw that my friend was reading this book and I liked the cover and the summary. I like reading paranormal/science fiction books. Luckily, Exile happened to be one. I felt that this line from the book described Mercy's life: "There's something wrong with me. When I wake up, I could be anyone..." (Exile by Rebecca Lim)

I found a connection in this book with the idea that in society, people try to act like someone that they really aren't. At times, some people wish that they can be somebody else. In this book, Mercy wishes that she can escape from the reincarnation and stay in one life; she wants to be herself. Unfortunately, her luck doesn't allow her to do or get what she wants. She is told what to do. In society, people take their freedom and the freedom to be themselves, for granted.

I feel like this line from the song "Not About Angels" by Birdy represents Mercy's life, and how she has to find Ryan, the boy from her past life, but she can't because Lela has died and she reincarnates again.

"...How unfair, it's just our luck. Found something real that's out of touch. But if you'd search the whole wide world...would you dare to let it go..."("Not About Angels"- Birdy)

Room by Emma Donoghue

This little room is so comfortable and safe to little Jack, but his mother knows that this place is no good. His mother has been held there for seven years, just when she was nineteen a man came up to her asking her for help because he thought his dog was dying, little did she know it was all a lie. After she woke up from the car ride the guy/Old Nick told her she would be staying here for a while. Now that her little boy Jack is finally five she's planning a way to get out from this eleven-by-eleven foot room.
A teacher told me it was good so I started to read. This book is very suspenseful and that's why it interests me.
People rely on others to get out of tuff situations. In this book the mother can only rely on her five year old son and herself, just like how in a Separate Peace by John Knowles, Gene comes to Finny for almost everything. When they get in trouble for anything like skipping Gene always lets Finny clear it up. In Room the mother trusts Jack to do what she tells him so they can get out of this mess.
