Best Book of 2014

The best book I read in 2014 was probably Divergent by Veronica Roth. I decided that this was my favorite because it is just so unique and unpredictably intriguing. It left me on the edge of my seat the whole time and I couldn't put it down.
This book is set in a dystopian time, which means it is in the future. The city is divided into five "factions", and each one differs based on their values. The five factions are Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Dauntless, and Erudite. Beatrice, the main character, lives in Abnegation, a faction based upon selflessness. When children turn sixteen, they take an aptitude test that tells them which faction they should choose to switch to- or stay in. This choice could change your entire life. When Beatrice takes the aptitude test, she is told that her results are inconclusive and she is something very dangerous. Divergent. Divergence means that her brain is different from "normal" people. When she chooses which faction to stay in for the rest of her life, will she stay with her family? Or will she choose a new beginning? Her choice helps her come into her own and come to know who she is-even in the midst of chaos.
What I absolutely adored about this novel is how much it can change in the turn of a page. One second everything is calm, cool, and collected, but next people are clawing each other's eyes out... literally! When you think a character is in danger, the plot totally turns around and another is in peril.
What I will long remember about this book is the detail and intricacy of the characters and their personalities. Everyone is constantly changing and becoming their own person whether it is for the better or for the worse. Also, nobody is the same. There is a coward, a wisecracker, a tough crowd, and the one who stands out from the rest. In this book, no two people are exactly alike and that is what I will never forget.
