I had never cried to a book before. Normally I need to visually see a story to work up emotions about it, but that all changed when I read The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. I choose this book as my best of 2014 because it really sparked emotion in me, making it a book I will never forget.
Main characters Hazel Grace Lancaster and Augustus Waters fall in love after meeting in a support group for teenagers with cancer. Hazel has lung cancer, but it is not deadly as long as she carries around an oxygen tank. Augustus had his leg amputated after a fumble with the disease, and thought it was all gone. Wrong. His body lights up with cancer "like a Christmas tree," and everything spirals out of control. This book is an emotional rollercoaster with deep romance and tragedy.
I will never forget how in love Augustus and Hazel were. Augustus would do anything for Hazel, and he proves his love by taking her out for fancy dinners and sticking up for her in a bad situation. Hazel tries her best to give the world to Augustus. Before they knew about his cancer, Hazel tried to separate herself from him just so he wouldn't get hurt if there were any complications with her cancer, even though she was deeply in love with him. But obviously that couldn't happen because Augustus would never let her go. Their story is absolute perfection that got me crying just from their happiness.

ReplyDeleteWow Emma! This sounds like an amazing book! I saw the movie last year and like you said, I also need to visually see things to get emotional about them. The story line you mentioned sounds like it is both happy and sad. I don't know if its much different than the movie, but I do remember the "emotional roller coaster" you described. At some scenes I would be laughing and at others I would be sobbing. I am really interested in reading the book to compare to the movie. I can only imagine how their love for each other would look like in words.
ReplyDeleteEmma, This was an amazing entry! My favorite book from 2014 is The Fault In Our Stars also. It is such an amazing book and has an amazing description that was later exemplified by the outstanding movie! I also agree with you about how emotional this book was to read! I usually am not one to cry either when it comes to books but this was definitely an exception! John Green is an incredible author and his books are full of beauty! Great Job, Emma!
ReplyDeleteEmma I know exactly what you mean when you say it's hard for books to spark that much emotion because it's not a physical scene, it's just on paper. So when books do make me cry, I know that the author did an amazing job telling the story and really effects the person that's reading the book. The way you described the story line not only shows that it's a good idea, but that it has a lot of meaning and emotion as well. You did a great job showing who the characters are, and that it's not only a sad movie but that it shows happiness too. You did a great job on your response and I'm adding this book to my list of books I'm going to read!
